South Cobb High School Department: Physical Education 1st semester / 2nd Semester COURSE TITLE: Advanced Weight Training INSTRUCTOR: Tommy Macon EMAIL:, [email protected] PHONE: 770-819-2611 ext. 065 CLASSROOM BLOG: tommymacon/weebly.com SCHOOL WEBSITE: http://www.cobbk12.org/southcobb COURSE DESCRIPTION: 1. Each student will be trained in safety techniques and proper techniques for weight lifting. 2. The weight program is based on explosive movements and quick muscle fiber engagement. 3. Sets and Reps are arranged in order to maximize the potential of each muscle group used for that specific lift. 4. This class is designed to provide general knowledge for a life time skill of weight lifting. 5. Students will learn safety of weight training. Will learn anatomy and physiology of the muscle groups we use. KEY STANDARDS: Standard 2 Demonstrates understanding of movement principles, concepts, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning performance of physical activities. Standard 3 Participates regularly in physical activity Standard 5.1 Learner will apply safe and appropriate care of equipment used in strength training. GRADING POLICY: Formative Assessment Simulative Assessments Participation – 35% Dressing Out – 25% Final Exam- 20% Unit Test - 10% Fitness Gram-10% GRADING SCALE: A - 100-90% B - 89-80% C - 79-74% D – 70-73% F - 69-Below SYNERGY ACCESS TO GRADES: It is strongly encouraged that you keep your Synergy login information in a safe place and that you have access to the information when needed. Parents should contact the Main in order to obtain their synergy password and access information. Please note that when you are viewing grades in Synergy that a blank grade column for your child has no effect on their grade. If the space is blank, then your student may not have turned in that assignment due to absence or the teacher may not have entered grades for that assignment at that time. An “X” means that the student is exempt from an assignment at the discretion of the teacher. GENERAL INFORMATION: MATERIALS NEEDED: You must where clothes that meet the school dress code. A T-shirt, shorts or sweat pants, and always a pair of shoes. If student is dressed out in inappropriate attire they will be counted a non-dressed. CLASS EXPECTATIONS: Even If you decide not dress for class on a particular day you are still required to participate in the daily workout or activity. Those who do not comply will be insubordinate and subject to administrative referral. You will not sit out without consequence. All or Nothing -Students must dress out in locker room. You cannot change in the weight room or at our roll station. No compliance with this rule will be treated with consequences. -There are to be no electronics out during class. School rules will be followed though if this becomes a problem -Language needs to be school appropriate and inappropriate public language will be dealt with. Clothes must meet dress code not have inappropriate things on them. FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION: Students with no more than one excused absence may qualify to exempt one of their final exams. Students with a course average of 80 or higher may exempt one final exam of their choice. Students with a course average of 79 or below may request that ten percentage points be added to the final exam grade. Towards the end of the semester, students who qualify may submit an Exam Exemption Form to the classroom teacher of their choice. Teachers must verify that the student qualifies for the exemption. PARTICIPATION: Class participation is an important component of the AP curriculum. Much can be learned from the exchange of ideas that occurs during class discussions. Frequent absences SERIOUSLY jeopardize your success in this class. The participation grade will be based on the degree of student involvement in the learning activities, including attention to and participation in written and oral exercises, class discussion, preparation for class, and homework. To reiterate: If you do not participate in formal class discussions, you will not receive a passing grade for that activity. ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY: Be here every day. Missing days will ultimately start affecting your grade. Participation is very important and if you are not present you cannot get your grade points. Any make up will be based on excused absences and done after you have returned. There is no late work. LATE WORK POLICY: Nothing will be accepted if it is not turn in by grade dead line. Exceptions are for the teacher to make at that time. So do not make any assumptions and turn work on time. TARDY POLICY: To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings. School policy states that students may receive teacher detention, in-School Suspension, and Out-of-School Suspension for repeated tardies. EXTRA HELP: Morning Session - We will schedule time during the semester on a individual basis on any make up work or help on a needed basis. CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES: As per the school’s policy, cell phones are not to be used during class time unless directed by the teacher for instructional purposes. Students will receive a discipline referral after one warning to put away any electronic device (unless the device is being used for instruction). Students are allowed to bring certain technologies to class (iPad, laptop, Kindle, etc.), but it should NOT interfere with the teaching or other’s learning. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Cheating is considered a serious matter. Any student who is involved in cheating/plagiarism will receive a grade of zero on the material, an unsatisfactory in conduct, and his/her parents will be notified. For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:
CLASSROOM BLOG: Throughout the year, students are expected to use the classroom blog daily. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the blog and come prepared to the next class. All handouts and assignments will be posted daily to the blog. My blog: To find information about weekly agendas, extra credit, work, or just more information about the class please visit our classes’ blog. STATIC AND DYNAMIC FLEXIBILITY DAILY . DAILY LESSON PLAN Differentiation for Advanced Learners-
Differentiation: DiffSS sStudents that require more of a challenge are given specific, more challenging goals for each lesson that are more time and effort than the average and/or struggling students to complete. For example, the body weight squats for the class is 20, advanced students are asked to at least complete 3-5 more than the overall class goal. I will give students activities that will accommodate their ability levels. I will give correction when needed. Differentiation for Novice Learners- Typically, novice learners are grouped with students that are able to help them with technique as well as help them with completing the workouts for each lesson. Also, I give more one on one instruction to novice learners in order to make sure that they are using the correct technique consistently. , I will give them activities that will accommodate their ability levels. I will give correction when needed. WORKOUTS WILL BE DIVERSE FOR GROUPS AT THREE LEVELS OF ABILITY.
